As the temps start to dip around Minneapolis, once again it’s time to think about cleaning your furnace.

Minneapolis Furnace Cleaning – it’s that Time of Year Again!

It’s already the first of September, wow! Where did the summer go? Soon we will be cranking up the heat and watching our utility bills climb. Sorry, but if you live in the Minneapolis Twin Cities area, it is unavoidable. Getting your furnace cleaned is an excellent way to conserve energy and save money on those utility bills. When your furnace is dirty, you are burning fuel in an inefficient manner. In a sense, your hard earned cash is going right out the chimney. If you live in the Twin Cities, annual furnace cleaning is a necessity.

In Addition to Minneapolis Furnace Cleaning, What About That Air Filter?

A dirty air filter simply makes your furnace breathe harder. To over simplify, imagine wrapping a thick scarf around you nose and mouth. In much the same way, your furnace has to draw air through the pleated filter and dust, dirt and debris. Our technicians will help recommend how often you should change your filter. A single person, who doesn’t smoke and has no pets will be able to change their filter less than a family of four with pets.

This is one of the common questions out on the internet right today pertaining to air duct cleaning. Because of the low price, it only stands to reason that homeowners need to proceed with caution. After all, how can trained professionals arrive at your house, anywhere in the Twin Cities, in a well equipped tuck, work for 45 minutes to a couple hours and leave with only $99, right?

I know it sounds too good to be true but, let me explain. First, I assume you have already read about duct cleaning on this blog. If not, here are a few posts you might want to read first:

Duct Cleaning Frequently Asked Questions – FAQ

Duct Cleaning Twin Cities

Twin Cities Duct Cleaning Prices

Whenever I am talking with customers that call in with questions about duct cleaning or to schedule a cleaning service I always ask them how long it’s been since they had their duct work cleaned. If they say last year, I don’t even bother asking them anymore questions. If they called in wanting the $99 deal that’s what I would recommend anyway.

If, on the other hand, they answer that it has been several years or perhaps never, I advise them to go with the rotobrush method. Here’s why; I am sure you have all seen the caked on grime that accumulates behind the refrigerator or stove, right. That “crud” is very similar to what adheres to the inside walls of your air ductwork. Imagine pulling the kitchen stove out and trying to simply vacuum it up. We all know that brushing or scrubbing is necessary.

The same holds true with duct cleaning. If it was just cleaned with a rotobrush last year, the $99 duct cleaning will most likely be adequate. But, if it has been a few years, I would strongly recommend the rotobrush method.

If you are ready to get on the scheule for either the rotorush method or the $99 air-sweep, give us a call at 612-412-1867, we would love the opportunity to showcase our work for you.

We have seen a few carpet cleaning companies start to offer duct cleaning in the Twin Cities over the past few months. Sounds convenient, but is it in your best interest? At first glance, you might think it is a match made in heaven. the company comes out and cleans your carpets and will provide duct cleaning at the same time. Very convenient, right? Maybe not.

Our Air Duct Cleaning Equipment Fills the Service Truck

The first question I have is, knowing how much room our duct cleaning equipment takes up, how will they fit everything on their trucks? The next concern I have is are the carpet cleaners using the same equipment for both projects? If so, what type of system is it? You certainly don’t want water or steam in your metal ductwork!

Carpet Cleaners also Trained to be Duct Cleaning Technicians?

Our air duct cleaning technicians are well trained in cleaning air duct work and have worked along side skilled service technicians for a long time before they are allowed to become the lead duct cleaning technician. Who is training these carpet cleaners and how are they being taught?

Unless you ask a lot of questions, get a referral from a friend or neighbor, I would advise making two seperate appointments. That would hopefully be the case with the carpet/duct cleaning company anyway. I would like to think that they would schedule two different teams, one appointment to clean the carpets, the other to clean your air ducts. If that’s the case you have really gained nothing. Might as well just call the pros. Call 612-412-1867 to get on the schedule

In this post I will try to give an unbiased view regarding the pros and cons of duct cleaning. Having been involved in the duct cleaning industry for so many years it might be a little difficult though, due to the fact that I have heard so many positive reports.

Duct Cleaning, the Pros and Cons

First the Pros:

Source Removal – If you get rid of the “source”, you will get rid of the problem.

Clean Air – It only stands to reason; if your ducts are clean the furnace and air conditioner won’t blow it around your home.

Health Benefits – Ask any allergist, or allergy sufferer.

Very Affordable – For as little as $99 you could have all the air ducts in your home cleaned.
Fast and Efficient – With two duct cleaners, the process should take less than an hour for a typical home with just one furnace.

No Haggling Over Prices – Unlike other domestic services, duct cleaning should be easy to bid over the phone. Nowadays, most duct cleaning companies will give you a price quote over the phone.

Now the Cons:

Duct Cleaning Cost – How clean is “clean”? Duct cleaning prices range from $69 – $1,000. This creates a lot of confusion, because the typical homeowner can’t inspect the work.

Discount Duct Cleaning – Beware of any company offering $10 off, or $50 off. What is the real duct cleaning cost? Ask $10 off of what price?

Per Vent Pricing – Most homeowners are unaware that their home may have 15-30 vents. Even at $10 per vent, this ads up fast.

Duct Cleaning Scams – As in any business, duct cleaning companies will pop up from time to time and try to take advantage of unsuspecting homeowners.

Incomplete Cleaning Methods – Look for companies that will give you a “Whole House Price”. You should be able to provide basic information about your heating and cooling system over the phone and get a price quote. If the duct cleaning company wants to come out to your home to give you a bid, hang onto your wallet!

People oftentimes ask us if duct cleaning will help their allergy problems. Our answer is always the same, ‘It can’t hurt!’. The truth of the matter is, when done correctly, it shouldn’t irritate your allergies. Will it help? Our customers and leading allergists say ‘yes’, air duct cleaning does help. So why don’t we come out and say, “Duct cleaning will help your allergies.”? Well, because an outdated, 10 year old EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) report says duct cleaning won’t help.

Duct Cleaning Techniques Have Greatly Improved

Way back in 1997 the EPA did a study that down played the importance of duct cleaning. Many feel this was due in large part to the “air duct cleaning scams” that were being reported all across the Minneapolis area as well as the entire US. While the report was very thorough, duct cleaning techniques and equipment has changed. “Duct cleaners” were running around in station wagons and mini-vans with a shopvac, calling themselves “Indoor Air Quality Professionals.

Allergists Agree, Duct Cleaning Helps

Allergy sufferers don’t need to travel very far to learn the benefits of air duct cleaning. A short visit with their local allergy clinic and they discover that duct cleaning ranks high on the list of allergy cleaning or allergy proofing a house. They will also learn the importance of things like; like mattress cleaning, freezing pillows, allergy bedding, etc), Most people who suffer from allergies know there is no cure-all which will relieve all their symptoms. They understand that air duct cleaning is just one part of the allergy cleaning process.

Is Duct Cleaning Right in Your Situation?

According to your furnace manufacturer (yes, Trane, Bryant, Amana, Carrier, Lennox… yes, everyone of them!), your furnace should be cleaned and inspected yearly. If the manufacturers all recommend annual cleaning, it stands to reason that your ductwork, which supplies un-filtered air to the furnace and heated or cooled air to your home, should be cleaned too. Most homeowners understand the benefits of duct cleaning, even if purely from a “heating and air conditioning maintenance” standpoint. For about $200 or less, a qualified Twin Cities air duct cleaning company will thoroughly clean all your air duct work and will inspect your furnace and air conditioner for no additional charge! So, if you are troubled by allergies, what do you have to lose? Schedule to have your air ducts cleaned today. Who knows, your allergy problems just might improve! DuctCleaningTwinCities.com, 40 South 7th Street, Suite 212-144D, Minneapolis, MN 55402 (612) 412-1867

If you live in the Minneapolis area (or anywhere in the Twin Cities for that matter) you are most likely in the “spring cleaning mode”, if not, you will be soon. As the temperatures start getting back to “liveable” and the furnace gets a bit of a break, most homeowners start thinking about cleaning the yard, the house and getting some fresh air back into their home.

Spring Cleaning Includes Air Ducts too!

In addition to cleaning the carpets, windows and the yard, don’t forget about your home’s heating and air conditioning system. As perhaps one of the most important…and most expensive… appliances in your home, the ductwork is begging to be cleaned! Consider this, the furnace has been drawing dirty, stale air through the cold air return, past the pleated furnace filter and back into your air ducts and distributed through your home all winter long. And don’t expect th furnace filter you paid $1.50 for, at the local home center, to stop much. Your Twin Cities furnace is designed to be cleaned frequently (annually according to manufacturer specifications), and not to be dependent solely upon a cheap little furnace filter.

Want Fresh Air – Clean the Ductwork

If it’s fresh air you’re after, duct cleaning should be one of the top items on your list. Most duct cleaning companies offer a $99 Minneapolis Duct Cleaning Special, as long as they are a reputable firm, it’s definitely worth the money. Chances are, you will save more than that back in the first few months of running your central a/c system, since your furnace no longer needs to work as hard to blow cool air through the clean air ducts. For more duct cleaning facts read; “Minneapolis Duct Cleaning FAQs” and you might want to read; “About Twin Cities Duct Cleaning”

Improve Indoor Air Quality with Regular Duct Cleaning in the Twin Cities

Dirty ductwork is a major source of indoor air pollution. Airborne contaminants like, dust, dirt and allergens are drawn into the air ducts, through the cold air return, every time the heating and cooling system kicks on. Over time, these contaminants build up inside the air ducts, creating a natural breeding ground for mold, bacteria, fungi and other microbes.

This is particularly true if you have a central air conditioning system like most homeowners do. The damp, cool, air produced by the evaporator, also known as the a-coil, is distributed throughout your air ducts. This creates a comfortable climate in your home, but mold spores and other organisms also thrive in those conditions.

Air Filtration Alone is not Enough

Dust particles drawn into the ductwork typically pass through fiberglass filters and infiltrate your HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system, undermining the performance and energy efficiency of these systems. These particles that make it past the filter can lead to higher maintenance and repair costs, and shorter service life in the long run.

The EPA has this to Say:

According to the EPA, “a build-up of only 0.42″ of dirt on a heating or cooling coil can decrease efficiency by 21%”. Keep in mind a 21% decrease in energy consumption is huge considering homeowners are spending thousands of dollars to enhance their system with new energy savings devices and are excited about a savings of much less.

Furnace manufacturers all recommend an annual furnace cleaning, tune-up and inspection of your furnace. Based on what the EPA says, combined with furnace manufacturer recommendations, it might be time for you to have your furnace, a/c coil and air ducts cleaned. Call 612-412-1867 today to get on the Duct Cleaning Schedule!.

A Clean Dryer Vent Saves Money and Helps Prevent House Fires

It’s been more than two hours and your clothes still are damp. If this sounds familiar, it could be time for you to have your dryer vent cleaned. If you are sure that your clothes dryer is warming up (maybe even too hot) and your clothes are tumbling, you may have a lint filled, plugged-up dryer duct. Time to call in the professional at Twin Cities Duct Cleaning.

Dryer Vent Cleaning Shortens Drying Times, Saves You Money and Prevents Fires!

Dryer Vent Cleaning Prices

The cost of dryer vent cleaning varies widely from one company to the next. Another point to consider is who is doing the work. An appliance repair technician is considerably more expensive than a professional dryer vent cleaning company like Twin Cities Duct Cleaning. Dryer vent cleaning prices seem to vary from $65 when included with another service already being performed at your home (duct cleaning for example), to $199 if a special trip is made by a repaiman. Companies will often charge more for dryer vents which are seriously plugged or have long runs. Fore example, a dryer vent which is vented to the other side of the house, two stories up and out through the roof will be charged more. That said, it’s quite rare when we see that. Most are pretty straight forward and are charged the quoted rate.

Look for a company that will give you a guaranteed quote on dryer vent cleaning. If the duct cleaning company needs to come out to do an inspection and give a quote, expect to pay a lot more. At DuctCleaningTwinCities.com the price is always guaranteed; $65 when included with air duct cleaning, or $99 for dryer vent cleaning only. Remember, the same equipment which is used for duct cleaning is also used to clean dryer vents, so there is minimal setup required if we are alrady doing a duct cleaning or furnace cleaning.

Dryer Vent Cleaning Benefits:

Faster drying times – the damp air is vented outdoors instead of recirculating within the tumble chamber.

A clean clothes dryer vent consumes less energy – The longer it takes to dry your clothes, the more energy you use. Most homeowners realize more than enough energy savings in just the first 3 months to pay for the service call!

House fire hazard avoided – the lint which has built-up over time in the heating chamber and dryer vent is removed, eliminating spontaneous combustion due to excessive heat.

Price $99.95 Special $65*

Twin Cities Duct Cleaning – will clean the heating box situated behind and underneath the tumble compartment of your dryer. When you clean your lint catcher, lint and other objects fall to the bottom of your dryer’s heating compartment, it ends up in what is known as the heating box. After cleaning the heating box, we will then clean the dryer vents. the clothes dryer duct will be cleaned from the back of the dryer to the out side clothes dryer exhaust vent using an air snake while vacuuming out all the lint build-up, dirt and debris.

Lint Build-up can Cause House Fires

Lint build-up is highly flammable and is also the leading cause of house fires. Lint build-up in the dryer vents will cause longer drying times and quite often, complete blockage of vents. Read what the Consumer Product Safety Commission has to say about dryer vent cleaning.
